Amidst the surge in Covid-19 infection and calls for the National Identity Numbers (NIN) registration to be suspended, the federal government of Nigeria still insisted on its commencement. The government had instructed the mobile network providers via the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) to deactivate the phone numbers of subscribers who failed to link their phones to their NIN.
Large crowds were spotted at the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) offices all around the nation which caused their workers to embark on a two-day strike citing the government’s failure to provide better welfare packages and adequate safety measures for its staff.
Subscribers with NIN have until January 19 as verification deadline to link their NIN with their SIM cards while subscribers without NIN have until February 9 to do so.
