The death toll in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s largest ever Ebola outbreak has now surpassed 2,000 people, with few signs that it will soon be contained.
The country has been fighting the highly contagious hemorrhagic fever for more than a year, but the grim milestone comes less than four months after DRC’s Ministry of Health announced that Ebola hadclaimed 1,000 lives.
A total of 2,006 people have now died – roughly two thirds of the 3,004 people infected – according to official figures from the World Health Organization.
The current outbreak is the second largest in history, second only to the devastating West Africa outbreak which killed more than 11,300 people between 2013-2016.
In July it was declared an international emergency and there have been cases reported in neighbouring Uganda, including a nine-year-old girl who tested positive for Ebola on Thursday, after travelling to the country from the DRC.
Uganda’s health minister said that the young girl was identified at a screening station on the border and is currently in an isolation center. She will be repatriated to the DRC for care…….read more
