Justice Olukayode Adeniyi of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja, Nigeria, has ruled in favor of the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, awarding the sum of 100 million naira against the Federal Government for violating his right to personal liberty.
The court also declared Emefiele’s prolonged detention without trial as a flagrant violation of his fundamental rights. Additionally, it issued a restraining order against the Federal Government and its agents, preventing them from re-arresting or detaining Emefiele without a court order.
The judgment stems from a fundamental human rights suit filed by the former CBN governor, who sought damages of N1 billion and requested the court to prohibit further arrests or detentions by the government.
Emefiele was arrested on June 10, 2023, shortly after his suspension by President Bola Tinubu.
