Jose Mourinho has been dismissed as coach of Roma, as announced by the Serie A side on Tuesday, citing that it was “in the best interests of the club.”
Mourinho, whose contract was set to expire in June, will depart the club along with his technical team “with immediate effect,” according to Roma.
“We would like to thank Jose on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club,” stated owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin.
“We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club.
“We wish Jose and his assistants all the best in their future endeavors.”
The 60-year-old Portuguese assumed the role in 2021, leading Roma to win the inaugural Europa Conference League trophy in 2022 and reach the final of the previous season’s Europa League.
However, Roma has faced challenges this campaign and currently holds the ninth position in Serie A, standing five points away from the Champions League positions after a convincing 3-1 defeat to AC Milan on Sunday.
Italian media reports suggest that former Roma captain Daniele De Rossi, a World Cup winner with Italy in 2006, could potentially replace Mourinho as coach.
